Economic history tells us that the global economy takes a long time to emerge from financial crises. At present, the economic environment still bears some obvious scars, including high rates of underemployment and reduced trust in market dynamics. There is also a suspicion that government stimulus policies could simply be digging the debt hole deeper.

If, however, we look rationally at the situation over the last five years, we should take encouragement from the fact that concerted monetary policy interventions have provided stability and given the global economy time to heal.
